Day 1: Drive From Rishikesh to Guptkashi
Meet our representative at your hotel in Rishikesh. Our Rishikesh to kedarnath trip began with a scenic drive towards Guptkashi . It’s roughly a 7-8 hour journey into the mountains. En route, you’ll witness the stunning landscape of Garhwal. A highlight of the drive is a stop at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers unite to form the holy Ganga – take a moment to admire this confluence. You’ll follow the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers upstream, arriving by late afternoon in Guptkashi, a temple town perched on the mountainside. Check in at your Guptkashi hotel and relax. If time permits, visit the Ardhnarishwar, a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. End your day with a delicious dinner, followed by an overnight stay.
Day 2: Driver From Guptkashi to Sonprayag, Gaurikund and Trek to Kedarnath
Wake up early (around 4-5 AM) and get ready for your journey to Kedarnath. After breakfast, drive from Guptkashi to Sonprayag (approx. 1 hour). At Sonprayag, switch to a local jeep for the 5 km ride to Gaurikund. This is where the 16 km trek to Kedarnath begins. Start trekking at your own pace through a well-laid path that climbs alongside the Mandakini River. The trail offers mesmerizing views – you’ll see lush green valleys below and rugged peaks on the way to kedarnath temple. The trek can take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours. If needed, you can hire a pony or palki at Gaurikund to assist you, or use pre-booked helicopter service.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Kedarnath. The sight of the ancient Kedarnath Temple against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains is a moment to remember. Proceed for darshan at the temple – if you make it by evening, join the soulful Sandhya Aarti where lamps light up the dusk. After prayers, check in to your guesthouse near the temple. Have a simple, hot dinner and rest for the night in Kedarnath.
Day 3: Kedarnath – Trek back to Gaurikund – Guptkashi
On day 3, you might choose to visit the temple again for an early morning Aarti or Abhishek (around 4 AM) for a special experience. Afterwards, soak in the sunrise illuminating Kedarnath’s peaks. Post a light breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to Kedarnath. Begin your trek down to Gaurikund by around 7 AM. The return trek is easier and faster – expect about 5-6 hours walking downhill.
Reach Gaurikund around early afternoon and reunite with your driver at Sonprayag. From here, you’ll drive back to Guptkashi. The remainder of the day in Guptkashi is for rest and recuperation after the long trek. You can share your Kedarnath experiences with fellow travelers at the hotel or stroll around the area in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay in Guptkashi.
Day 4: Return Drive From Guptkashi to Rishikesh
After breakfast, check out and start your drive back towards Rishikesh. The downhill journey offers another chance to enjoy the beautiful vistas of the Garhwal region. You’ll pass again via Rudraprayag and Devprayag, possibly stopping for refreshments and to stretch your legs. By afternoon, the terrain flattens as you exit the hilly region. Arrive back in Rishikesh by late afternoon or early evening. We drop you off at your preferred location in Rishikesh or Haridwar, marking the end of your Rishikesh to Kedarnath road trip. Hiring a private taxi from Rishikesh to Kedarnath costs between ₹17,000–₹20,000 for a round trip if you choose a standard sedan or hatchback. For larger vehicles such as an SUV (Innova), the both-way fare usually ranges between ₹30,000–₹35,000, as these vehicles are preferred for the steep, hilly terrain.
These charges typically include the driver allowance, fuel, parking and toll charges along the way, since the taxi stays with you throughout the journey.
The road distance from Rishikesh to Gaurikund is approximately 210 km. This drive takes around 8 – 9 hours to complete. On the way you’ll drive through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi. From Guptkashi, you’ve to travel to Sonprayag which is just 30 km away. From here, one needs hire local taxi till Gaurikund. Kedarnath temple is another 16 km trek from Gaurikund.
There is no direct bus all the way to Kedarnath temple, but there are buses from Rishikesh to Sonprayag during the Yatra season. Uttarakhand Roadways and private operators run early morning buses (around 5:00–6:00 AM) from Rishikesh that go via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi and reach Sonprayag by late afternoon (a journey of 9-10 hours). The bus fare is (approximately ₹600–₹800 per person. From Sonprayag, you would take the local jeep to Gaurikund (₹50–₹100) and then trek to Kedarnath.
